Job Title: PK- Instructional Aide

Exemption Status/Test: Nonexempt

Reports to: Principal

Dept./School: Cherry Elementary

Minimum Salary: $12.11/hour

 

Primary Purpose:

Provide instructional assistance to students under the direct supervision of a certified teacher. Assist in preparing, conducting, and managing classroom activities.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Educational Aide I Certification (Preferred. Must be received within year of employment)
  • Bilingual Spanish aides must be able to speak, read, and write fluently in Spanish and English

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to use good judgment
  • Ability to understand and comply with established procedures
  • Ability to work well with children and adults
  • Knowledge of general office equipment
  • Bilingual Spanish aides must be able to speak, read, and write fluently in Spanish and English

Experience:

  • Some verifiable experience working with children preferred (e.g. daycare, Sunday school, sports, girl/boy scouts)

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Assist the teacher with instruction including preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
  2. Assist teachers in guiding individual students or groups of students in daily activities and instructional exercises assigned by the teacher including personal hygiene, appropriate dress, eating habits, appropriate behavior etc.
  3. Reinforce appropriate behavior in accordance with teacher’s plans and assist in classroom discipline and behavior management as developed by the ARD committee, and school plan.
  4. Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students.
  5. Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, inside classroom, in the lunchroom, and outside the classroom during arrival and dismissal.
  6. Assist the teacher in maintaining administrative records and preparing required reports.
  7. Participate in in-service training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as needed.
  8. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  9. Contribute to a positive school climate through use of praise and encouragement.
  10. Organize, clean, disinfect and maintain equipment and supplies.
  11. Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.
  12. Stay up-to-date professionally through the selection of quality professional learning opportunities for personal growth.
  13. Research district policy, precedent, and current practices prior to taking action.
  14. Participate as an effective team member who contributes to district, department, and content goals.
  15. Demonstrates proficient levels of technology applications.
  16. Participates fully in drills and safety exercises to provide for the safety and overall emotional wellbeing of students.
  17. Utilize time wisely for effective management of job responsibilities.
  18. Maintain punctuality in daily work times, appointments, and meetings.
  19. Meet task completion deadlines established by supervisor.
  20. Maintain friendly customer-service-driven interactions with all stakeholders, students, teachers, administrators, and co-workers.
  21. Work cooperatively with co-workers and supervisors to ensure that the goals of the school/department are met.
  22. Maintain a positive and professional tone in all communication (i.e. email, written, and verbal).
  23. Perform other duties and accept other responsibilities as assigned.

The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers and presentation materials. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.
